Myths are like poetry. The language of both are largely symbolic. Myths are parables that use a story as a vehicle for important, sometimes universal, truths, even occult (hidden) knowledge. Jesus, for example, spoke in parables. There is some measure of mythology in the Bible. But myths are often misunderstood as spurious and imaginative tales created to while away the hours around the fires of primitive cultures. As we are so much more sophisticated these days -- or so we believe anyways -- it is easy dismiss the myths of the past in such ways. Those wise elders of a time long past, however, could use only the language and symbolism accessible to their listeners to be understood by those who had the power of understanding. For the rest, even as it is today, they were just entertaining stories.

Symbolism is a language unto itself. It influences our lives today, though many do not even know, consciously, the influence it has on them. It is a wisdom unto itself and whosoever understands the wisdom of symbolism understands much more than others can.

I hope this helps.

Mythology is simply the ancient religious beliefs of a particular country or people, that have been supplanted by the ancient religious beliefs of another country or people, usually for no other reason than the conversion of the country's ruler to the foreign religion, or by military conquest and forced conversion of the people.

In essence, the "new" religion (such as Judaism, Christianity or Islam, for example) gets promoted officially to the status of a "religion", while the "old" religion (such as Greek "mythology", Roman "mythology", Egyptian "mythology", Aztec "mythology", Inca "mythology", Norse "mythology" etc.) gets relegated to the status of "paganism" or "mythology" or "satanism" or "heathen religion" or "idolatry" or "witchcraft" or something along those lines.
