I live in New Orleans, and plenty of people are still waiting and waiting for the aid promised. Insurance companies are still dragging their feet on settling claims. In some parts of N.O., houses remained as they were after the hurricane. It is a sad situation here.

I don't know, what have the democrats accomplished since taking over Congress? What has the Louisiana government officials in office accomplished? You act as if the republicans are the only ones responsible for doing anything. Louisiana is run and has been run by dems for years. Does that tell you anything? Texas is republican run, and we do not have the money issues here with our government. We have one of the most prosperous states in the U.S.
John S. is right. Our roofing company went to Louisiana and couldn't get crap done for the local government bullcrap and not wanting to pay. Our company wasn't the only one that hasn't been paid either. Our state governor takes care of it's citizens and makes sure we do not have to experience something like Katrina. We live on the coast in Houston. We have had some very bad hurricanes here, and nothing has ever been left in the mess that New Orleans is in . Need to put the blame on the Louisiana government officials for the mess they are in. The squeaky wheel gets the grease.
Paulcondo made a great comment about what Louisiana thinks is more important.
Please do not miss out on what Doc has to say. His comment is exactly what was wrong and still is wrong in New Orleans, Louisiana.

You know what? Phuque N.O. and the b.s. democrats! I lost a lot in Ivan. And, when the storm passed, we came out of our shelter, picked up our chainsaws and started clearing the mess. We went to our neighbors and checked to see that they were all right. What we DID NOT do was to rob the local convenience store, rob our neighbors and then sit on our dead hind ends demanding that the government do for us those things we should have been doing all along.
Did my insurance company jerk me around? Not nearly as much as did the mortgage company. The insurance company sent out the claims adjustor, told me what I could expect to get (my live stock wasn't covered and I didn't get nearly what I'd paid for the barn and everything in it), and then sent the check. Unfortunately, the check was made out to both me and the mortgage company. I signed it and forwarded it. They held on to it for well over a year. I had to call them every single day and harrass them until they finally paid. And I'm one of the more fortunate ones! While I'm still trying to clean up MY mess, there are still people living on our dime -- living in FEMA trailors. Folks, Ivan went through in Sept. 2004!
It is not up to the U.S. government and the tax payers to come in and make me a new house! That's what insurance is for!
Per ABCs 20/20 television show broadcast just the other night: the basic difference between the Democrat and the Republican (when it comes to social programs and charity) is that the Republican believes it is up to the individual -- we help ourselves and each other. The Democrat believes it is up to the government and therefore neither helps themselves nor anyone else! Who gives more to charities? Republicans.
So, while places like Geaute (?sp), Mississippi were completely wiped off the map -- a predominantly white/republican population, you probably have never heard of them. Why? Did I help? You bet!
So, two years later, what has the "g.w. bush regime" accomplished. Buttloads more than you! What REALLY needs to happen, is we need to end the welfare programs all together. The people have gotten so accustomed to government handouts, they've forgotten how to fend for themselves!

Now, two years after Katrina, why haven't those who have had free housing and debit cards all this time, done something to improve their own lives, instead continuing to hold out their hands for more freebies? It's time that people take responsibility for themselves. Those same people who sit around and bleat for the government to "help them" are the same people who go running to the ACLU when they don't like a law enacted by that same government. How much "rebuilding" has the government done in Mississippi? Or Florida, with all the hurricanes suffered there? Not nearly as much as they have already done for New Orleans. It is time for New Orleans to rebuild itself, if it is going to. Contrary to the belief of some, New Orleans is not a special case. Tragedy happens everywhere.....it is just that most people get on with the task of living, rather than crying about it. And don't get all swollen up and tell me I don't know what I'm talking about. I do. It was called Celia, and it's how I left Corpus Christi.....without government help, I might add.

Why are you asking a politicly motivated question where you try to bash the bush administration. He is the presedent, but the entire point of our government is that he is NOT king. He can't do anything but check the congress and stand on the side to make polite suggestions. The congress is the real power because if they can't mannage to pass a bill on a specific issue then the president is never even given the oppertunity to agree with it or put a stop on it.
I know it's easiest to just blame the one man that is most visable but if you have a problem with something don't ask why Bush didn't get this or that done, ask why congress didn't work together to get this or that done.
maybe you should go back to high school government class and sit in for a while

Just to enlighten all you "poor, information deprived Bush haters," Hurricane Katrina has more to its story.
Before the hurricane hit, President Bush offered to build a dam to hold the floodwater back, but his offer was turned down because LA didn't know it would be so huge, and were basically unprepared. The fedral govt also supplied busses and gave those citizens the oppurtunity to leave LA to avoid the storm. Some citizens took advantage of this oppurtunity, but some did not, and I'm sure they regretted it later. President Bush went down to the areas hit by the storm, and offered condolenses and support.
Fast forward to 2 years later. Now.
This problem is being elongated soley for the purpose of "long live the Bush Bashers." These citizens need to stop complaining and basking in their aquired sympathy and start rebuilding for goodness sakes! This is a local issue, a state tragedy, and believe it or not, Bush doesn't spend his time doing nothing all day. He is a busy man. We are in a WAR and he has to run the country!!! After two years, these citizens need to start becoming independent. Bush is not at fault.

Considering the response should be the local government first, ask the mayor, and governor. It was their place to get the people out and it is their place to rebuild and get the people back. It is also the residents place to assist in the rebuilding. Maybe this is part of the problem, too many are depending on the feds to do what they need to be doing. After all with all the donations and federal funding that has gone to NO and not other areas, there should be tons of things that have been done. Look at the other areas affected and see how much they have rebuilt without all the hand outs.

Why are you blaming President George W. Bush for anything that has went wrong in this country. A hurricane was not his fault. He was not the one that was supposed to make the call for evacuation. Mr. Ray Neigan was to blame for the evacuations. And you might say that Bush did not call out FEMA in quick enough. You have to think that the President of the only Superpower in the world might be a little bit tie up with work. The director of FEMA should have called his department out before the hurricaine hit. If you want to blame anyone for anything involeving Katrina don't blame Bush, but blame Mr. Neigan or the govenor of Louisiania. They are to blame, because the line of fault starts with the mayor, then the govenor, top executive in FEMA, Congress, and then the president.

It's not the responsibility of the Federal Government to rebuild anything! They provide funding (which last I checked was being grossly mis-used and appropriated by state and local officials)
Funny, the people of NO are still whining about it, I was in Biloxi during the first anniversary. There was still visible damage, but everything was cleaned, the trash and garbage removed. People living in FEMA trailers were working on their houses and everyone was making an effort to rebuild. Businesses were re-opening, employment was on the rise.
Then you have NO, still whining because their local Government failed them and now want to blame Bush. Katrine never landed there either. Bush is not to blame for laziness

It will take at least 10 years for New Orleans to become close to normal. The levies and pumps have to be engineered, financed, and built. 220,000 homes were destroyed plus schools, businesses, public transportation, etc. Most of this was not covered by insurance because flooding isn't covered by any insurance company. It must be purchased through FEMA.
Its a mess and the most I can blame this administration for is the initial response to this disaster and the bungled handling of the funds that have been dispersed so far.
