i guess all animals are like this, but it being such a sensitive organ, just wondering why they are not behind some bones like the heart, or padded somewhere. I'd actually have them in my bottocks with some protection.

If you are that worried, I remember seeing a martial art in china (I forget the name) where the practitioners kick each other in the bollocks. The presenter give the master several of his best and the guy stood there laughing. They also lifted weights with there penis, not small weights either they must have be 200 pounds plus. I just cringed and curled up into a ball.
The other two are correct it is temperature control;-]

The balls are kept safely in an elastic bag. The bag contracts when the temperature outside is very low. The bag expands when the body temperature is high. You can see this yourself. This is to protect the sperms produced by them The sperms need a particular temperature to survive. If it is kept anywhere inside the body , this phenomenon is difficult to occur. That is why it is outside , still safe between your strong thighs.

You don't really need to be worring about that. But, they are set outside of the body because sperm can only develop and live in the testes only if they are set at a cooler temperature then the body. Basically, your balls aren't "Inside" your body is becuase they need to be in a cooler environment in order to function and survive. Its ok, if you have serious health problems with them then go see a doctor.

Terry's right about the temperature bit. But I'd say they were very well protected by our reflexes. Not a lot makes us 'cover up' with our hands as even the slightest hint of being struck there!

They have to stay at lower temperatures for the sake of the sperm. Apparently 98.6 is too hot for the sperm. But in the winter they need more heat right??

It's too hot inside your body. The sperm would die. Heat = no sperm. No sperm = no reproduction. No reproduction + around 80 years = no humans. No humans = no more global warming = Yay! (the one upside to the balls being inside the body.

They are external to control temperature. The sperm would die if the testes were internal.
