Check the following in this order:
#1. Battery connections at both ends.
#2. Battery voltage with a volt meter. You should have 12.5 volts with a fully charged battery.
#3. A click or a repeated clicking sound is the starter solenoid not engaging the Bendix into the flywheel or ring gear. It's often less hassle to replace the whole starter with a re-built one with a lifetime warranty. If you're like me I would replace the solenoid only, and see if it doesn't solve the problem. Solenoids are relatively inexpensive. If your starter had ordinarily been working properly I'd jump on the solenoid first.

If your battery is 4 or 5 years old, you may need a new battery. Loosen the battery cable clamps at the battery terminal posts and rotate the connectors back and forth a few times to make sure you have good connections to the battery. Then get a "jump start" to get your car running good enough to drive it to an auto parts strore where they check your battery and charging system for free in the parking lot.

Since the battery is crucial to starting your vehicle, a dead or weak battery means your vehicle won't start.
If your vehicle makes a clicking noise instead of starting up, your battery may be dead or weak. When batteries die, it's usually because there is a weak or bad cell inside. A common cause of failure is someone forgetting to turn off the headlights. Did you know that everyday use can also wear down your battery?

flat battery
the clicking is the solenoid kicking in, putting a huge [but normal] load on the battery thus dropping the voltage of the battery below that that will hold in the solenoid so the solenoid drops out, the battery voltage rises high enough to pull in the solenoid again and so the cycle repeats
flat battery

If the motor isn't doing anything and all you hear is clicking then it could be your battery or battery connection (terminals). If the motor sounds like it's trying to start, maybe could be your starter or possibly ignition switch?

Does it appear that the clicking noise is coming from the engine, in the area of the starter? This is my guess, and that indicates that the starter is bad, and you are hearing the starter solenoid trying to get the starter to engage.

It sounds like the starter Bendix or the starter solenoid. You can try and take a hammer and tap on it while someone else trys to start it, usually you can get it to start by doing this.
Good luck and I hope this helps!
