my current laptop has 2 RAM slots. One of those have 512 MB RAM on it and the other one is free. Can i use any sized Ram like 256 Mb or 1 Gb on the free slot or does it need to be 512 MB only? The maximum supported for this laptop is 2 GB !

That depends on your memory slots. I don't know what type of laptop you have.

Check your documentation and see if your laptop has DUAL CHANNEL MEMORY. Alot of Dell insperations do.

If so then both chips MUST be the same MB rating. (512 + 512)

If it is not dual channel memory then you can mix the MB chips up to your manimum supported. (512 +1MB)

Well, with only 2 slots and a limit of 2GB it follows that each slot will hold a maximum of 1GB each.

As far as the minimum amount of RAM in each slot is concerned you'll have to check your Motherboard manual to see if there are any restrictions.

Currently RAM is cheap. It is running about $45 for a 1GB stick. Since you are dealing with Vista, my recommendation would be to go all the way and install the full 2GB of RAM.

It is not unreasonable to just install the 1GB RAM stick to give you a total of 1.5GB RAM.

You can check out the prices and run the RAM analysis tools located at either of the following two sites.

Hope this helps.

You can use 256 or 1GB for free slot but you have to check the bus speed of 512 MB ram. if you 512 ram bus speed is 333 then you must buy a 1 GB ram with 333 bus speed.

You can use any, as long as it is the same type of memory.
