and travels toward San Francisco at 60 mi/h. If the two cities are 380 miles apart, how many hours will it take for Mary to meet Phil? Write an algebraic equation and solve.

Mary 50 mph
Phil 60 mph

After 1 hour:-
Mary travels 50 miles
Distance apart = 330 miles

RELATIVE speed of Phil to Mary = 110 mph
Time before they meet = 330 / 110 h = 3 h

They will meet 4 hours after Mary starts off.

distance travelled by mary in 1 hour=50*1=50 miles.
let at 'x' distance from san mary meets phil.let 't' be the time taken by phil to meet mary.
x=50+50*t
380-x=60*t
380=50+110t
t=3 hours.
mary takes (1+3) hours to meet phil.
ans is 4 hours.

The easiest way to resolve this is to express the distance of each one of them from a similar point starting at a similar time.
If you consider t=0, the time at which Phil leaves LA, then the distance between Mary and LA is
M = 330 - 50t
because at t=0 she already ahs traveled for an hour so she only has 330 more miles to go and she gets closer to LA at 50 mile/hour.
The distance between Phil and LA is:
P = 60t
because at t=0 he is in LA and he gets away from LA at a speed of 60miles/h.

They will meet when M = P or 330 - 50t = 60t or 330 = 110t which means when t = 3 hours after Phil's departure (or 4 hours after Mary's departure).

Assume, they will meet t hours after Mary starts. In that time, Mary will travel, 50t miles and Phil will travel 60(t-1) mile.
So,
50t +60(t-1)=380
110t=440
t=4
4 hours after mary starts.
