Spiders are similar everywhere in the sense that almost all of them have venom, but most of those venoms are essentially harmless to humans and other mammals. England's fortunate in having no dangerous native spiders, although the occasional nasty (mostly the Brazilian Wandering Spider) does turn up now and then in tropical shipments. Most spiders are pretty fiercely territorial, though, and will do just what you saw - kill the others they're forced to live with. It's not always the biggest ones that win, either! As for biting, sure they bite on occasion, but over many years, I've been stung by innumerable bees and wasps, but only been bitten by a spider 3 times, and that's with handling a lot of spiders but no bees and wasps... Generally speaking, spiders won't bite people unless in self-defense. Of course you won't always know what 'self-defense' means to a spider until too late.. Better just to leave them alone if you can stand it.

Many spiders are cannibalistic, Tarantulas eat their young. If they are not dispersed quickly the babies will eat each other! Spiders in the UK are not poisonous, although recently some venomous ones from overseas have been surviving. Even small non venomous spiders can bite and some can cause irritation, but we are a long way from being like Queensland where you can loose limbs and die if not treated quickly.

Some British spiders are poisonous to their prey but not to humans and there are few that can give a little bite to humans but it is rare.

The british spider has posion but cannot bite you, so don't worry unless you live next door to somebody who keeps them as pets as a nasty one might escape and see you as lunch.

All spiders are venomous, but not to such extend to harm people. They are enough venomous for their simple needs (like catch a fly), but if they would bit a human being they wouldn't do much harm.
Besides I am sure that if they encounter one they would prefer to escape rather then attack.
