Americans:Please stop shaming yourselfes.
every American i have spoken to(or know about)always think that a 'brit' accent is a English one.Well, actually, there are FOUR countries in the uk or britain as you call it there. These include Wales(the best one, also where i live)Scotland,England and Northen Ireland. And,incidentaly, they all have differnt accents.Like,i have a Welsh accent.A Welsh accent is a 'brit'accent as it is from Britain, but,it is COMPLETELY differnet from a English accent,Scottish or Irish accent. And obviously you american did not know that.To clarify things:
English accent=different from Welsh,Scottish and irish accents=all british accents=not the same!!!

Do you know the differences between the Philadelphia, Brooklyn, and Boston accents? Probably not. But then most Americans who live outside the northeast don't either. They filmed a movie that was supposed to be in Philadelphia. We laughed at how stupid it was because all the actors and extras had Brooklyn accents.
I have an American accent. But it is different from a Minnesota accent or a Georgia accent, which by the way couldn't be any more different. I can't even say I have a Pennsylvania accent, because even in our small state there are about 4 or 5 different accents. So lighten up because I'm not Henry Higgins.

I've not traveled in Britain enough to recognize a Welsh accent, though I do recognize scottish and irish ones. (and can discriminate British accents from Australia and New Zealand). There are, indeed different accents even within the four, with northern England and the London area being different?
I don't usually try to name people's accents at all. . . .

wow more ignorant generalizations huh? go wales??
anyway this is probably because the only actors or actresses and media exported into our mainstream media by the uk, are from england. i love english accents they are so sexy!! even on bbc america - pretty much all the actors and actresses have english accents. and some people just dont know what the uk is since you all are a symbolic monarchy. and WHO is the symbolic head of this monarchy? come on you can do it.....thats right honey - the queen of ENGLAND. thats how she is presented to us anyway. so when many ppl hear this they think oh - england right?
....yeah i have no clue what the hell a welsh accent sounds like. but i love irish and scottish accents - paolo nutini comes to mind..ahhh : )
frankly i dont really care if people confuse accents. you just correct it and move on. why would spreading knowledge about some small aspect of your culture be iritating? ive heard foreigners say plenty of things about my people that sound a little weird to me but i dont let it annoy me, i just learn from it. the things that are annoying - when they generalize us as being selfish, materialistic, etc. yeah that pisses me off too but i guess i can understand why they say that stuff.

What an utterly ridiculous question. The UK is only 21,636 sq miles larger than New England
If I asked you as foreigner to be able to discern between the accents of a Vermonter and the accent of a Rhode Islander you would not be able to do it . So then why would you expect Americans to be able to do the same thing with the tiny countries of the UK?
FYI
Vermont and Scotland are about the same size as are Rhode Island and Wales.
BTW
If you took the entire UK and dropped it into the middle of the Nevada desert ,it would disappear.

We really don't care about your accent. I suppose it is an ego thing on your part to even think it matters to us. The British Isles are not the center of the universe for many Americans.
There are a lot of variations in the speech of Americans and we don't obsess about it - it is observed only in good natured kidding.
By the way, we also don't really care too much about the royals either. Their value add for civilization is scant. The Bolsheviks may have been onto something in 1918.
You may want to improve your spelling and punctuaton if you are looking towards a career as a language critic.
Get a life!

I agree that some Americans can be a bit careless in their generalizations.
But I find it somewhat ironic when folks who get completely perturbed and demand recognition/tolerance/etc can, at the same time, seem oblivious to their own generalizations.
Way to lump "all Americans" into your alleged conspiracy theory to dishonor the different accents found in the British Isles.

Can you lighten up a little?
Within the United States, we have lots of accents too and (Southern, Boston, New York, Chicago) And I am not here blasting the Brits for not knowing the differeniation between them. Could you identify all these accents from the US if you had to? Probably not.

Commenting on people's accents is probably the most iritating thing in the world. Just beats out people that like monarchies, bland food and not brushing their teeth. ;-)
