There are many to choose from. Here are some of the top ones.
1. Final Fantasy Online
2. World of Warcraft
3. Lord of the Rings Online
4. Everquest
All of those require a monthly fee. If that's ok with you, check 'em out. If not.....
5. Guild Wars (my personal favorite. You have to buy the game, after that it's free)
6. Runescape (Free, but you get what you pay for. Probably the best free game out there)

Everquest tends to nehave more a like a proper D&D/role playing game..
The massive online games such as World of Warcraft and LOTRo (which you have to pay a monthly fee for) are more generalised..but you can play as a warrior/warlock/priest etc...LOTRO follows the books quite well..and WoW..well its HUGE! Lol..on that you can play as good or bad (Alliance vs Horde)..as elves..taurans..orcs..etc...
I thoroughly enjoyed both..
Guildwars is free if you want to try something out...
Runescape..I had a go but the graphics are SO old now - and its full of kids who loves calling you n00b every 5 minutes as you are trying to level up....

Hey,
To get Lord Of The Rings Online for free you can click here on the link: http://bitly.com/1uaUVm0
With this link you can get the full version completely free.
If you enjoyed watching the Lord Of The Rings saga, then you should also try its game version.

One of the best I ever played was Everquest.....it does cost money but it is an endless world of D&D type play.
There was one that was based on superheros with a similar concept called City of Heroes that was also really cool, but again their is a fee.
I find the free sites to be really cheap and boring if you have ever played one of these two.
Good luck and Good journey!

Please, whatever you do, don't think about playing runescape. Play a proper game, like guild wars or wow or shadows of angmar, but not a crappy game like runescape...
