Chances are the hardware is fine. Usually, on a new PC that you purchased, and didnt build, crappy software is the culprit.

The BEST way to fix it is to format the HD and reinstall XP with SP2. Make sure you get all the drivers ahead of time, as you will need the NIC driver to reconnect tot he Internet.

If you built the PC, you need to check all the settings in the BIOS and make sure your timings are all correct for your memory and CPU.

You do one thing,
1. First Install only Pata Hd and start your system check out the same problem is getting repeated or not
2. Secondly remove Installed Pata Hd and fix Sata Hd now
By this you can find out which Hd Is creating problem for ur system
if still suffering with same problem
try to use different data and power cables for each one......

All the Best

Sounds like either memory (RAM) or Power Supply issue.

First I would invest in at least 1GIG Memory and I always go with "Kingston". They are very reliable, versatile and have a life time guarantee.
If you don't have at least a 400 watt supply when running a lot of power it could shut down the system or parts of your hardware.

How much memory is in the computer? I've had the same problem on my desktop and resolved the issue by adding more memory (I went from 512MB to 1GB).

Since this is a new computer, I'm assuming you have 1GB or greater. If not, then this might be a simple solution for you.

Good luck!

Could be overheating. clean out the dust bunnies*, you might need to add a fan.

*No vaccum cleaners! They generate static and will kill your computer dead!
