Because they aren't going to shut up til they get what they want. One of the most corrupt crime ridden areas in the US and they want to pour billions into it so that they can party safely. It was stupid to build there in the first place and it's still a dumb idea now.

Center for Oil industry in the Gulf
Center for the fishing industry in the Gulf
Entry way for international shipping on the Mississippi River
Center and entry point for international tourism. At one time among the most visited cities in the world.

This is a strategically important city and should be built, not rebuilt because what it was, was corrupt and disgusting. The city government couldn't handle it before the worst natural disaster in US history, there is no chance it can now.
Part of the problem is the global warming nuts. They warned that there would be more and larger storms hitting New Orleans.
Two facts: 1. There is no such thing as a CAT6 Hurricane, it's not possible. The laws of Physics say so.
2. Last year and this, not one single Hurricane has made land fall anywhere in the US.

A proper levee and pump system WILL work.

The city should be turned into a district and put under the jurisdiction of the federal government.
The problem is not nature or sea level, it's corruption and incompetence.

The city has $260 million dollars that it can not touch because Nagin has done nothing to improve the cities bond rating. He is determined to turn the city back into the 'chocolate' hole it was into which money went and was never seen again.

The federal managers that are there have no power. They can only speak from the bully pulpit while incompetent city miss-managers waste federal money.

The problem is off limits because of political correctness. If the governor had any guts she would use the rising murder rate as a reason to declare marshall law there and turn management over to the Fed.

That's my thinking also. It isn't like most of New Orleans was some kind of treasure in the first place. Also a lot of those who have gone back were soon roaming the streets and causing trouble. Murders, always a problem there, are back in full swing. It isn't much of a haven to live in, so why sink billions of tax dollars trying to rebuild housing when it could happen again? Because the New York Times and other news media thinks so and even if we did they'd still be moaning it's not good enough because the same old problems are still going to be there. I have American pride but I am never proud of New Orleans. It was an eyesore of lousy housing. Should we replace the same junk?

New Orleans is a city, much like San Francisco or Hollywierd, or Las Vegas that has an international reputation as a place to go for all the sin you can get away with legally. After all, its too easy in the Big Easy, isnt it?
Now its the Big Nasty murder capital of the US.
It was a good day this city was leveled, they should rebuild it further inland, just get rid of the corrupt police force and start from scratch!

PS Planksheer, The Dutch government is about as twisted as they get. They run a country full of Hippies and Heroin adicts and they smoke Hashish on the streets of Amsterdam.
The Zider Zee was THE national project and they've been workiing on it for decades.

IMO, except for a few blocks of the French Quarter, NO is the worst city I've been to in the US. (I've been to Bombay - that's worse) It is hot, humid, corrupt, smelly, crime ridden, and impossible to navigate in a reasonable time (even worse than LA). It cannot support its people. It does have a strategic port however so the best solution IMO is to make it a federal district and have the Army Corps of Engineers run it.

The only problem I can foresee is that the Saints will have to find a new home.

Stay tuned to the next flood coming to a levee near you,

Say NO to NO as we NO it..

The New City of New Orleans is rebuilt, growing and is making money, the tax money is at about average with only 60% of the people.I think the plan is; how will the mayor keep all his unwanted poorer US Americans citizens from returning.

Amazing, we are talking about the home of our fellow citizens like they don't even exist. Why do we rebuild in California, how about tornado alley? Both places which covers more than one state will continue to be hit with natural disasters. The Carolina's, get hit with more hurricanes than Florida, it gets rebuilt. What ever happened in our great country that we now just dismiss the problems of some of our citizens without a second thought? Have we truly become so lazy that we now just say it's a problem and instead of solving the problem we ignore it? Someone please tell me again about American pride and how great our country is.

Because New Orleans is the 4th busiest port in the world.

Too much stuff goes through there from Minnesota, Ohio and the Dakotas on down south, to Louisiana.

It is a vital port, it needs to be rebuilt correctly.

As for all the houses and all that, I really dont want to see another dime spent on that. 155,000 dollars a person seems more than enough to get back on "their feet"

Maybe once the levees are rebuilt properly (unless Nagin finds another stupid project to spend the money on) flooding can be controlled. I have no problem with the Feds rebuilding the levees but that's where it has to end and local government has to take over.

They can protect it from flooding if they build enough dikes properly! It has to be there because it is a major shipping point for ocean transport to be reloaded onto barges to transport up the Miss. river to the interior of the US. The WTC should not be rebuilt under any circumstances. It should still be a crime site. Has anyone noticed how instantaneously they sterilized that site right after the event? They can still go to the location where the debris was dumped and take test samples to determine if thermite or other explosives were used!
