We just found out he's got type 1 diabetes and will have to be on insulin for the rest of his life. Usually we deal with it ok, but I work nights, and when he's home alone it really hits him hard. He's broken down at least once a week and had an anxiety attack while I'm at work. I've started to look for a different job so that we can be home together at night, but what else can I do?

Help him watch his diet. And show him how many people live full, productive lives with type 1.

Just show him that he will be fine as he eats healthy and watches what he eats. I know a guy who has diabetes and you couldnt tell if you ever met him and it does not hinder him from doing anything. As long as he takes his shot there is nothing differnet between me and him except that he is a little weird but that is a different story. There could be alot worse things. He will be fine just support him like you are but I wouldnt change your lifestyle at all cuz that would make him feel like diabetes is dicating your lives when in all reallity there is no need for it to.

I agree with the first answer. You can be supportive by changing your diet to match his, which by the way is a very healthy diet. This way he won't feel all alone. My husband did this for me, I had gastric bypass and there are alot of things I cannot eat, and my husband wanted me to be successful, so he cut the same foods from his diet too. This is loving, supportiveness. Good luck to you both.

Its really no big deal as long as he follows doctors orders. its not like being told you have inoperable cancer. He needs to watch his diet, take his meds, exercise and whatever else the doctor tells him and he will do and be well.

Have friends or family visit him at nighttime and to discuss it with him before doing anything about it.

what you're doing already is the correct thing, once you find the right pattern you can relax and take care of him
