How much do they make?
Well, it's safe to say they make a lot of cents...sorry, couldn't resist that.

I would hazard a guess they make a pretty decent living, perhaps equal to the average industrial chemist. That's just a guess, of course. If they set up their own firms, the best (or luckiest) can become quite wealthy.

I found a How-to about becoming a perfumer here:

It might help to have a degree in environmental chemistry, since an increasing percentage of the population are developing multi-chemical sensitivity. It would help to know what those chemicals are.
Some people can't be around perfumes, even the ones in soaps that remain in clothes after they've been washed, rinsed, and dried.

1) "Less is more" is the most important slogan for perfumes. They have to be subtle to work. 2) There are a lot of professional fragrance makers who lovely finetune perfums. It is horrible to see women use these sophisticated perfums not separately as intended but in a mixture with perfumed shower gels, deodorants, perfumed hair spray and so on: They totally waste the sophistication of the main perfume. Such women just have no clue about odors and subtlety, not idea of lifestyle and taste. 3) I don't like everyday usage of perfums. It invades my privacy and the mixture of so many perfumed people adds up to a disgusting sum; particularly because most people use too much perfume. 4) But I agree that a subtle and well choosen perfume can be nice if applied for special occasions, if the perfume fits the person and situation, if used subtle and stylish.

I only like to wear a few scents. And they don't bother me at all. (But make sure they aren't from old bottles.) It seems you have as sensitive a nose as I do. Many people don't realize how much their perfume affects us. Many of us get migraines or physically sick from all the perfume they wear. I've found that I can only control my family and friends; I just take a deep breath and cover my nose when the "smelly" people are near me. If they ask why, I say that I'm allergic to perfume.
