You might go into a shop a hundred times a day but every reaction that you give to the shop keeper and the reaction you get from the assistants will be different. The older you get you realise that there is no such thing as a new word or phrase or a new song. I believe there are only four chords in a guitar. The clothes that grandchildren are wearing today were worn by the grandparents decades ago.

Yep. I agree circumstance changes even the most mundane of things. And, everything, every idea gets recycled, but with a slight spin on it to make it "exciting and new."

What you have to bear in mind is this - it is all new to the young folk - they are meeting it all for the first time. As older people, we should remember those feelings and embrace them otherwise experience degenerates into cynicism and the 'Victor Meldew' in us rears up!

Heraclitus said that "we never step twice into the same river."
In the time it takes us to move our rear foot forward for that second step, water has continued to rush forward, the banks have shifted a bit, and the river is no longer the same. So, I guess what you are saying is a bit like what he was saying. The shop and shopkeeper that you speak of may be the same but their reactions will have changed because of other factors outside of your control.

Excellent observation (since it conforms to mine!). I've speculated that perhaps there is also a finite number of variations on all the reactions that could ever be had in that shop, but I've concluded I cannot live long enough to see them all -- but likely every one of us will have collectively seen them all at least once. Hence, nothing is new and yet every situation is new.
