Were many considered enigmas?or perplexing people who were different from others?

Of course they were Different, or they would be Of their Time.

Mozart was considered Very Controversial at his time. DiVinci, Copernicus, Newton, Einstein, Archimedes, John Lennon, for a Few.

But not All: Franklin, Sun Tsu, Gandhi, and Martin Luther King Jr. were all Normal, Learned people of their Times.

Being Ahead of your Time does not make one an Enigma...Just a Little Different thinking....

People who were ahead of their time were socially and technically advanced, usually considered eccentric and weird while alive but revered after their passing.

Mozart, any painters, William Shakespeare.

perhaps this question is ahead of its time...

Generally they were considered perplexing people, and not understood, I don't know if you can say they were ahead of their time - they just didn't fit into it. They may just as likely been behind their time.

Of course, and end up unappreciated until several years later. And often, so many years later that their ideas are plagiarised and they never even get credit that they deserve.
