2.6 to 2.8 gig,512 ddr,80 gig hd SATA dvd_+-r with 2 to 4 usb. this is not my line but i want to know their respective functions? in addition they advice me to have a system installed as winxp service pack 2. brief and concise idea will do.

yup thats all good set... include video card 128mb will be better, but if you like much higher, more expensive... hmmm what else...
your processor must be duo core or core duo... but if you need a lesser price, pentium 4 will do...
those memory, operating system and procesor speed that you indicate on your question are alright...
