its a great day out.

The expression (Idiom), "to die for" means literally that it is stunning; remarkable... An idiom is an expression (i.e., term or phrase) whose meaning cannot be deduced from the literal definitions and the arrangement of its parts, but refers instead to a figurative meaning that is known only through common use. Thus the word die, when used Informally denotes that you desire something greatly: I am dying for a box of chocolates. She was dying to see the exhibit.

It can be used to describe something especially desirable or delicious. First applied to foods. When sugar first hit europe, it was so expensive thus the expression was used to express a food that was highly desirable to the speaker's social group but perceived as being almost unobtainable. Thus was an era when you could be hanged for stealing cheap food.

To Die For is also a 1995 film written by Buck Henry, based on the novel of the same name by Joyce Maynard (ISBN 0-595-26939-7), and directed by Gus Van Sant. It stars Nicole Kidman, Matt Dillon and Joaquin Phoenix. Major supporting roles feature Illeana Douglas, Wayne Knight, Casey Affleck, Dan Hedaya and Alison Folland. Kidman's performance as the cold-hearted, vindictive, manipulative, and overly ambitious newsreader determined to achieve fame by any measures drew enormous critical praise. Kidman was nominated for a BAFTA and won a Golden Globe Award for her performance.

To 'die for' means you could just die with the magnitude of the situation. So if it is a day out to die for then it is a pretty good day out. Where is it, butlins?

It means it is the best day out ever! Not a great expression. I have never liked it. It is generally used by down-market magazines.

That you would be willing to die if it meant you had the opportunity to experience the day. Basically that it was an unbelievable fantastic day (in your opinion) like other answerers have said.

I'm assuming people had a day out that was so awesome, you could die for it by wanting it so badly. Kinda like saying " I'd die for a candy bar right now" etc.......LOL, I could just be way off base!
