As others have mentioned, they are in some states, and other states they are legal. Check with the DMV and ask about your state.

Radar detectors are not lega in some states. Virginia is one state that "outlaws" these. I'm sure there are other states that do not permit the use of radar detectors. Truckers [18 wheelers cannot use them]. I live in Indiana; they are legal in this state. When traveling, each state will have a sign upon entering the state telling you they are illegal, it the state does not allow them. In Virginia, at various intervals on the Interstate system, they remind you they are not legal.

In some places they are.. The state of Minnesota they are legal if your not a commercial driver..
