Is this a trick question about personalities? Hmm. I'm gonna say empathy has no price for it encompasses everything that is understanding. Looking at it another way, it does take a certain amount of patience and compassion which in turn take a lot out of an individual who experiences feelings and emotions. So I'd say patience and compassion. Depends on the person. Some see these qualities as a price to pay and to others these qualities come natural.

price? well, in my opinion there is no price to be paid for an empathic feeling, there can only be a "reward" for that. The reward of a beautiful friendship that could start if empathy arises, that's so beautiful. This "emotional resonance", this ability to recognize, perceive and feel directly the emotion of someone else, does marvelous things and does not consume you in order to "pay" some price related resources of you.

There is no price for empathy - except on your own emotions. To feel for someone else, to understand them you need to relate your own experience pain, loss happiness whatever to theirs.
