get more respect than the living

There is a sort of unwritten rule of conduct in a large portion of our population that says "Don't speak ill of the dead." I'm not sure where it comes from, but I have a couple ideas. You don't mind if I get a little long winded, do you? Tough.

This particular social convention may have started out merely as proper etiquette when one is at a funeral, or in the presence of someone who is grieving. That is to say, it's pretty bad form to go to a funeral home where Roger Kaputnik is laid out,and tell all the other mourners what a schmuck ol' Roger was....even if he really was.

Or, it could be based on the idea while the dead might be dead, they might not be all together gone....and if their spirit is hanging anywhere around the vicinity and they hear you
m----- f--- them up and down, they may decide that a good old fashioned haunting might just bring about an attitude adjustment on your part.

That's just two possibilities....there may be more....I'll check in here a couple more times....thanks for the thought-provoking question, and ....sleep warm.

The dead are given more respect and dignity than the living because they can no longer defend their own honor, dignity and respect. They are afterall, dead.

But the roots of this go back thousands of years, when pagan cultures would give gifts, sacrifices and food/ drink to the dead in order to make the spirit happy in the afterlife. Failure to do this resulted in haunting by evil spirits.

Because we never respected them when they were alive, now that they are gone we realise their true importance.

Also dead people are said to have Godly powers. Nobody wants to mess with them.

because they're dead and everyone tries to be nice and respectful when they talk about them because they can never fix the wrong things they might have done to that person.
