It was an English colony.
The Irish fought for their independence in the early 20th century and won a victory but the people of a small area in the north who were of scottish descent insisted on staying under the rule of the United Kingdom.
This is the situation today with Northern Ireland as part of the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland as an independent and sovereign state

The quick form.

Once the Irish were a bunch of pain-in-the-butt pirates, right up there with the Norsemen. The people on the other nearby island got tired of this and conquered them. 900 years or so of bickering, terrorism, and assorted warfare later they wised up and left.

Oh and Guiness was invented somewhere in there.
