usually -- i had someone explain it as the first album is a compilation of all the stuff that got the band from their first practice session to their recording contract. after that they are supposed to come up with different stuff just to continue a recording contract. can you see the difference in motivation to create new music and how the first one goes through a major filtering process while the rest is just kind of dumped out for a record label contract? sad to say but its the nature of pop culture. 15 minutes and you are done.

There's a strong tendency for this to be the case, I agree.

But there are also some artists and bands who hit a 'golden middle' and then decline into sell-out (or just lose the plot).

Examples:

Rolling Stones - First albums forgettable, golden period in the early to late 70s, went downhill all the way after that

David Bowie - First album cutesy and very Kinks & Dylan influenced, real innovation set in about 5-6 albums later with "Low", "Lodger", "Heroes", etc.

The Beatles - First album not exactly deep, they didn't "get it" till "Rubber Soul" and "Revolver" at least 4 years later.

But on the other hand, there are some rocking debut albums that really defined the artist and are (maybe) their best albums:

"Naveed" by Our Lady Peace
"The Clash" by, errrrrrr, yeah, The Clash
"My Aim Is True" by Elvis Costello
"77" by Talking Heads
"The Velvet Underground & Nico" by errrrrrr, yeah, The Velvet Underground & Nico

Heaven's no, if they were they'd be out of business pretty quick, besides just using Meatloaf as an example he had so many fans they waited 20 yrs for a new CD. he now has 3. That's all 3 and he is one of the greatest singer/songwriter's alive. Now Savage Garden's first was it's best. I loved it. Elvis' certainly proved that wrong as did Michael Jackson and a 55 gallon drum full of other famous bands that still perform today. What were you thinkin??

No, the best album for Alice Cooper and his band was their 3rd album m the Billion Dollar Babes album and Aerosmith's Toys in the Attic was not their first album and we know the Beatles first album was not their best .

Not at all. In fact, some artists like Bruce Springsteen and Sheryl Crow have never released their actual first albums.

Very often it is but not always. I mean for the Beatles that definitely wasn't the case.
