I would try a Kennmore from Sears. My mother gave me one six years ago for my birthday. I have only had to replace a filter, an agitator(my fault), and belts(also mostly my fault).

We've had a Hoover, a cheapoo that's been going for 18 years, the last one lasted 15 years, same kind. We have a Oreck we don't use, it's a piece of crap, it's noisy, has open wires inside and I consider it dangerous. We've tried to take in back but, there is no place, as advertised, to bring or send it to.

I have the $300 Hoover windtunnel (with bags). I love it, but it is a little heavy.
