No, cd-rom's read cd's only... if you need to view dvd's or get data off of a dvd, you will need a dvd-rom, which can be had for under $25 nowadays...

No you can't .. the technology, hardware and protocol are different between CD & DVD drives.

If you need to use DVD Images use something like "VirtualCD / DVD" from Daemon tools.

Beware of adware / spamware before you download any free software and check the fineprint of the license.

Nope, but you can do it the other way round. The question is about the same as asking "Can I go on a date in my dump truck or haul 10 tons of rock in a sports car?" - lack of capability.

No, CD-R/RW drives cannot read DVDs. Combo Drives (CD-R/RW/DVD-R) are very affordable now.
