Great songwriter and perhaps therefore artist, absolutely. Great musician.....I'm not so sure. I don't mean that he's lousy, but great musician I think you need to be fairly accomplished at certain things in order to grasp that mantle, and I don't think that Tom Petty has. I think Michael Angelo Batio, Yngwie Malmsteen, Carlos Montoya, Andres Segovia, John Mclaughlin, Wes Montgomery, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and Frank Zappa are people who are great musicians, and most of these people don't have songs that many people can name off the bat, but Tom Petty does.

He's a good songwriter and performer but not that great a singer. I would say he's good enough as a musician to have kept a career going for more than three decades.

I wouldn't say that he's a great musician as far a technical ability or profundity of lyrics, but he has his own distinct sound and style which is the more powerful part of music sometimes.

a great songwriter hell yea
as for his guitar ability, not so much
he was invited to be part of the travelling wilbury's with george harrison, roy orbison, bob dylan and jeff lynne. if he couldn't hack it as a song writer, he would have had no place in this band. he's a legend and a wilbury.
