can i use SLi mode on the motherboard? i've only heard about cross firing using ATI cards on the mobo..

YES, but ONLY on the x16 PCIe slot (blue):

Since the board is Crossfire ready, you can NOT put an Nvidia card on the orange slot to run SLI.

Yup, that motherboard has a pcie-express slot so you will be able to put it in. I put an external link from gigabyte's official website on their motherboard specs.

Also there is just 2 more things you shoudl double check before purchasing. The 8800 ultra requires a 500W power supply as a minimum requirement. So ussually going a 100 W over the minimum is better for some head room. And make sure it fits in your case, this card IS HUGE! It is roughly 10.5 inches in length, so you wanna make sure you got enough room in your case.

Besides that you are ready to go. (not that you need to sli with this card anyways :)

you will be able to use 1 8800 but not 2, it does not support SLI for nvidia cards.
