in the directions it says take it as soon as possible, but no later than 72 hours(3 days), but when u check with a doctor, or planned parenthood they say take it within 5 days?
why is that? they say dont follow the directions and take the pills at the same time instead of taking the 2nd pill 12 hours later?

Sooner is better. The hormones in those pills that effect early pregnancy are more effective during the critical first hours.

The reason doctors say otherwise is because they know that it is the massive influx of hormone that does the job of terminating the pregnancy.
Earlier requires less.
Later requires more at once.

Therefore, the "morning after" pills can be effective at a later time. To insure the efficacy it is best to have a large dose all at once, regardless of when you take them. This is especially important a day or two later.

Generally, you will have more assured results and less side effects if you take the pills sooner. They can still be effective later, but should be taken in large doses to insure termination. That's why, IF you don't respond immediately, there is still hope, but you should respond with everything at once to insure that any possible pregnancy can be averted.

Preventing pregnancy at these early stages is NOT abortion, regardless of what pro-lifers say. If you even suspect that you might be pregnant and you do not want to be:
take the pills as soon as possible,
Take them all at once,
Drink enough fluid to stay hydrated,
Eat and sleep as you normally would.

If you have any cramping or discomfort, you can take normal over-the-counter pain or menstrual medications.

If that pain or discomfort persists, see your personal doctor immediately and tell him everything.

You should follow the directions on the package. The manufacturer has tested them for the best results.

Pharmacists are REALLY smart. They will explain to you exactly how the doctor wrote the script, and may have even more information. Make sure you speak with the actual pharmacist. Good luck, hon!! :)
