everyone's always pointing the finger at rap music for causing violence and bad influences. and then they take a lyric from 50 cent that talks about him shooting a cop. well DUH if you take any lyric from 50 cent its gonna be explicit but that doesnt mean im gonna go shoot a cop! there are plenty of good rap influences out there. how come they dont take a line from kanye west, or nas, or even tupac?
every kind of music has its positive and negatives sides, yet everyone wants to blame the bad side or rap. if you're not a complete idiot, you wont do EXACTLY what the rappers talk about in their songs.
and what about rock, heavy metal, or emo music? where they complain about how sucky their lives are? emo music is depressing the nation everywhere, a very serious mental illness! and half of the rock songs were sung by singers high on weed and pcp!! you think THAT's a good influence, huh?
has anyone noticed that 80 percent of all stoners in highschool listen to rock and emo music?

I never used to like rap all that much but now it's my favorite music to listen to. It is great to dance to regardless of the lyrics. I can understand how some people might be offended by them but they shouldn't listen to it then! I'm really not into emo that much so I don't really know too many songs about that but the whole emo thing is a bit dramatic don't you think?

Music was never a competition...I'd always hate when people say that rap sucks and rock rocks.

And if you were going to use that to defend rock, most are going to say that today's rock and emo music sucks. Plus, I doubt 80% of the stoners listen to rock and emo music. And that 50% of rock bands are influenced by drugs. The percentages are too high.

I think of rappers as producers. Sure, they might not sing, but they make their own beats, rhymes, and such, which is more of a producer thing. That's what they basically are. Rock bands play instruments and should be writing their lyrics and melody. How they're influenced on what they're doing, we shouldn't be judging.

I'm not going to argue or agree with you. But it's good that someone can defend rap in a smart way. Kanye, Eminem, and Common are the only rappers I can stand.

Edit: To the guy who uses "gay" and "retarded" as insults...who the hell have you been hanging out with lately? Oh, surely not RAPPERS...

Well, one reason I don't enjoy rap music has a lot to do with the fact that I didn't grow up with it. It didn't start becoming popular until I was already in my 20s. However, I think earlier rap was pretty good and I do like the music that focused on poverty, being pestered by the police, and other social problems. What I don't like is the rap that glorifies drugs, violence, materialism, pimping, and puts down black women. Another thing I don't like is hearing bits and pieces of other songs being sampled over and over again. I would rather see people actually write their own music instead of using older material and then try to pass it off as something new.

Not every one who sees a mercedes ad, goes out and buys a mercedes....But some do.
Not every one that hears 50 cents lyrics are going to go and shoot a cop....But some would be influenced! And add least with heavy metal, They are actually PLAYING THIER OWN instruments and not using a computer for thier talents. Any sort of music is an influence to the individual. They are ALL to blame for influence....That's the reason for music, Be it good or bad.

cause the majority of rap (and I dont mean all rap) is only about demeaning women and worshiping money and bling.

old school 80's hip hop was about having fun. Yo MTV Raps showcased beat and rhyme skills. Tupac rapped about social ills.

MTV Jams is basically a 24 hour commercial for buying stuff and bragging about it. today's popular rap is all about money and bragging.

The fact that you are trying to justify the bad rap by comparing it to bad rock shows that you see the problem with rap.

I like some rap. Common is amazing. Even Kanye has some deep messages in his stuff, but most rap is commercialized crap. It's not a reflection of society like it used to be (ie. Public Enemy, Tupac, NWA)
Now its just about bragging.
