Let the numbers be x and 24-x. This takes care of the sum stipulation.
Then 7*x = 5*(24-x). Solving, x=10 and 24-x=14.

a+b = 24
7 a = 5 b
a = 5, b = 7 would satisfy the latter, and these sum to 12, so double them.
10, and 14.

let the numbers be X and Y.
now, x+y=24 ....(1)

also, 7x=5y...(2)
or, y=(7/5)x substitute this in (1)

then, x+ (7/5)x=24
or, 5x+7x=24*5
or, 12x=120

thus, x=120/12=10

and, y=24=10 = 14
