what is the difference in using the n-word and the r-word? are you certain all rednecks are racists? are you sure some blacks are not racists? have you ever thought about the facts of this matter? what do you call the elderly, the handicapped or people who cross the mexican border illegally. got any pet names for them? do you think white people who sharecrop, have little to no education and born in utter poverty and drugs run rampant just like the black ghettos of the usa have chosen to be part of what they once call the peasants and the trash? think that is what those little "redneck" babies and adolecents were meant to be. you think it is genetic like they once insisted was the black man's problem? well, god bless you.

Nobody answered where did you learn about these "rednecks." the lack of knowledge, with a couple of exceptions, is profound and further proves the socialistic philosopy of the public school system and the routine treatment of the term by the mass media owned by a select few.

I've been asking this most of my life. I come from Texas and we get called all types of names. It's no different than the N work. Just as offensive to us.

As a person from the South, the REAL term "redneck" comes from someone who works outside and the back of his neck gets sunburned from the exposure (i.e.- a farmer). But it has come to mean something else now. It's no different than using any other derogatory term for someone else.. Not ALL red-necks are racists..some are...but SOME of the people who aren't red-necks are racists as well. You can't generalize a group of people..that in and of itself is racist. I call the elderly "Senior Citizens", I call handicapped people "handicapped". I call people who cross the border "people"..because they are just trying to find a way to feed their families and make a better life for themselves (just like the rest of us). I think farmers are educated people, just about all the ones I know have a college degree. There is a lot of math and science involved in being a farmer. Good question though.

In modern usage, redneck predominantly refers to a particular stereotype of whites from the Southern United States. The word can be used either as a pejorative or as a matter of pride, depending on context.

The redneck stereotype:
The term redneck is seen by some people to be both racist and classist, as it is was originally used to describe a person of pale skin that has been sunburned doing outdoor work or field work, and disproportionately applies to the poor. Today, a redneck is a stereotypical southern United States socially conservative, fiscally liberal, rural, working class white person with northern European ancestry.

The popular etymology says that the term derives from such individuals having a red neck caused by working outdoors in the sunlight over the course of their lifetime. The effect of decades of direct sunlight on the exposed skin of the back of the neck not only reddens fair skin, but renders it leathery and tough, and typically very wrinkled by late middle age. Another popular theory stems from the use of red bandanas tied around the neck to signify union affiliation during the violent clashes between United Mine Workers and owners between 1910 and 1920.

Some historians claim that the term redneck originated in 17th century Virginia, when indentured servants were sunburnt while tending plantation crops.

You answered your own question here so ? I don't like being called a Poleck, simply because some add "Stupid Poleck" and, those are fighting words. I have been to three Universities and have more education then some ever thought.
People, usually the lower intelligent ones, have to both stereo type and label people, why? maybe so they can remember where they fit into society.

A very good black friend of mine claims they stereo type their own, Black, brown etc. I can't do that though, I'd be called a racist.

A redneck is an immigrant.

Because the immigrants from Scandinavia, Poland, Ireland, etc, were fair -skinned, their necks tended to be sunburnt in the hotter climate of the USA, particularly in agricultural work.

I think that is what I have alwaysunderstood.

Merriam-Webster says: a white member of the Southern rural laboring class

George Wya = redneck in a suit

Condoleeza = wannabe redneck in a skirt.

Couldn't resist, actually I think that such a derogatory term should not be used to describe individuals or communities
(with George Wya being the exception to the rule, followed closely by the REDpublican Party).

Keep smiling.
