Yes. I actually kept in contact with one of them til the advent of email.
Mine is from Australia. We share pics of each others kids now...do web cam, etc. One day hopefully we'll meet in person.
(BTW, it's nice to have a "normal and interesting" question on here for a change rather than the usual shmag that no one wants to read.)

nicely, Glutey, it relatively is spectacular! I had pen-buddies all the way by way of intense college and faculty, yet they have been unquestionably acquaintances who had come to stay as substitute scholars for the college twelve months and for summer season substitute courses...it is so cool which you had a pen chum in Finland, and so some time past. Congrats on looking your pen-chum! I even have an information superhighway pen-chum who's very almost 5; i'm doing that to help her mum out, as there's a clean toddler interior the relations, and the little female is performing out, and it form of feels to make her behave greater helpful... I even have an trustworthy-to-God pen chum now down below, because of the fact he lives interior the Bush and lightening struck his computing device, so we've desperate to maintain on the old college way, paper-to-pen, and that's amazingly a effective challenge!

Yes, in 3rd grade. It was with another kid at another school a few miles away. My class and the class at the other school had assigned pen pals. At the end of the year we met. It was kind of fun.

During middle school, I had a penpal from France. We wrote to each other as part of a school-sponsored program. We continued communicating throughout high school, and unfortunately lost contact in college.
