A person is more or less defined by how they percieve themselves. It is called the self fulfilling prophecy. If you believe you are shy and quiet, then you will be. If you believe yourself to be confident, then you will be. It's not something that happens over night, our perceptions of ourselves shape us over many years, which is why it is often so difficult to change ourselves. Certainly your character and personality plays a part in who you are defined as, but over time your perception of yourself can even change those as well.
A simpler way to look at it is that you define yourself. It certainly isn't easy. It takes effort everyday, but you can shape who you are over time.

More information please. Are we discussing what defines someone's identity, beauty or what -- what aspect is being defined.
For example, one could say that identity -- "who" you are -- is a matter of self-perception, but physical appearance is different. One might perceive himself as handsome when in reality he is not pleasing to the senses. He defines himself as handsome, but others can't. Neither can character be only a matter of self-perception, because your actions might indicate poor character regardless of how you perceive them. If you mean what defines a human being in general then I guess it is the degree to which they fit into the species homo sapiens. In that case, you probably only need to look at them to know.

Your view of what is going on around you and how it relates to you. Taking into account how you were raised and the environment in which your view comes from. Whether it was from a poor, middle class, or rich point of view. Understanding whether you have a choice or the ability to make a change or difference in those circumstances.

Their outlook on life. Ask someone (as a test) "Why do you think you're here". Tell them to try to be serious with their answer, and weigh it against your own beliefs. Just don't judge, that way their definition is unique.
