Don't worry about it at all. It's got nothing to do with oxygen intake, or temperature, or anything. Blowing bubblenests is a natural instinct for male bettas. They do it for two reasons: firstly, because they want to mate, and secondly, because they are marking out their territory.

However, just because your betta wants to mate doesn't mean he should. It is not unhealthy to leave him without a mate; but it can kill him if you try to breed him when neither you, he nor the female are ready. Breeding bettas is a complicated process and you need to do lots of research and not just dump a female in the tank with him.

Other than that, don't worry about it as blowing bubblenests is usually a sign of a healthy and happy betta.

I've kept Betta fish on and off for over 20 years. That bubble-blowing behavior that you describe is generally believed to be a pre-mating thing ... that the Betta is making the nest to prepare for eggs.

Ummmmmm ..... maybe yes, maybe no. Even a male fish that has NEVER had access to a female will sometimes do this. But not all of them do!

Kinda like dogs ... some like chew-toys, some don't. The male Bettas who haven't bred seem to blow bubbles out of boredom.

I've also noticed that a Betta that is kept in a tank with other fish is less likely to do this ... and that one that is kept alone in a bowl is MORE likely to blow bubbles.

I'm not a Fish-Whisperer ... so I can't tell you why they do what they do ... all I can say is that they're really cool fish ... they thrive in cold or warm water, with or without other fish, hardly need any care, and they're soooo pretty! Good Luck!

The one with the bubbles is blowing a bubble nest. Is the other Betta a female? The bubble nest is a sign that it is ready to spawn. I would discourage you from breeding until you thoroughly understand how to prevent them from injuring each other. Email me if you have any questions.

EDIT: If they are both male, it is likely that the Betta that has been with you longer is more secure. The one that is blowing the bubble nest is attempting to "beat" the new Betta, and show his dominance. As long as you have them, they will "compete" with each other to see who can attract the mate that they will never get... a little instinct goes a long way...

Male bettas often blow bubblenests. It's to prepare for a mate to come along, though it won't hurt them any if she never shows up. The bubblenest is to hold the eggs until they hatch. The male betta watches over the nest and the babies until they're old enough to swim off on their own.

He probably gets less oxygen than the other.
Try putting them where it's warmer and the air is more still. Mine is on top of the frig and I tap his bowl whenever I do dishes. You didn't say how often you feed them. Also, they shouldn't be able to see each other all the time. Are they both male? or one male & one female. This could be the reason.
I've found that even a picture of another Beta will excite my Beta too much. I only let them see the picture --- or themselves in a mirror.. about once a week and only BEFORE the eat---not afterward (could be hard on his heart).
Also, only give them 4 tiny beads of food every TWO DAYS. ! THAT's ALL!
You can cause the water to get all bubbly just by overfeeding them.

It's merely a bubblenest. Those are used for holding egg's for breeding, but breeding beta's are a bit difficult because you have to seperate the young before they get of age to start being aggressive.

;)
This is a so called bubblenest from a male

It means that they are ready to mate

Betta's are bubblenest breeders, that means the male blows the bubbles, and when you would spawn them, he would put the eggs in there

Hope that helps
good luck

Edit*
Never tap their tank, it only stresses them out

He is ready to mate, and preparing a nest for the lady friend he thinks he has, get him a mate and see if they spawn.
