Why is it that when you're driving and looking for an address, you turn down the volume on the radio?

Good question - a star for you!. The mind has a problem processing more than one or two things at a time. So you're driving (major concentration); your listening to music/talk on the radio (medium distraction); you need an address (major decision making distraction).

One has to go, so the easiest and most natural thing to do is turn down the radio. I used to be a Program Director. My job was to listen all the time. Nowdays, I can't even work with the radio on in the background. The mind adapts.

Because having the music on takes away from you concentration and focus. Most of us, being intelligent persons, will still have a part of the mind focused on the tunes on the radio if we keep the volume up. Ergo, we turn it down so we can devote our mind to the task of address seeking. Hope this helps!!!

Hmm... I think it might be an automatic reaction. Whenever you're driving and you need to do something you turn the radio down, right? Talking on the phone, having a conversation with the lady riding shotgun, ordering a burger at Micky D's, anything that requires focus while driving tend to also require less outside noise. Focusing on the numbers on houses is just another one of those moments.

Becuase you are trying to concentrate on something else while you are driving. The radio is a distraction.

LOL! I never thought of that, but I do it too! I guess I do it to concentrate - on what, I don't know. Someone should do a study on this!
