My son is coming back after 4months from serving overseas and his motorcycle will not start. Can a motorcycle be jumpstarted or does he have to buy a new battery?

If the battery is completely dead, you can charge it and still use it, but it's pretty much ruined and won't last long. Best to go ahead and buy a new one. Walmart usually has one to fit. Don't get ripped off buy going to the dealer.

You can jumpstart a motorcycle, but it is best to take the battery out and charge it up on a trickle-charger. Do not use a car battery charger on a motorcycle battery--they charge too quickly and will reduce the life of the battery. You can also take the battery to most motorcycle shops or dealerships and they'll charge it for you (over night) for a nominal fee. They will also tell you if the battery is any good or if you'll need a new one. This is your best bet.
If you do jumpstart the motorcycle, do NOT have the car running, just connect the leads to the battery with the car off. The added juice from the car's charging system is too much for a motorcycle, and you can cause serious damage.

Yes, but with the cars engine turned off. Most cars alternators produce 2X the amps of a motorcycle charging system , but in a bind a battery only jump will get you started.

Remove the battery and take it into a service station. They can test it and tell you if it is still good.
Probably just needs a slow charge.

charge the battery with a trickle charger first if it hasn t been sitting too long you may be ok but it isn t recomended to boost those small batteries

and hook it up. It'll charge it overnight, and keep the battery fully charged when it's not ridden for a while.
