While I'm completely obsessed with Grey's Anatomy, and this is a very old topic on the show, are there any people out there who get very aggrivated with Cristina's contempt towards Finn for being a veterinarian? Why do some people have this negative attitude towards veterinary medicine? It is in itself a medical specialty, and veterinarians study more than one kind of anatomy. It's a medical profession dependent entirely on your skills because the patient cannot speak for themselves. While Cristina can be funny, she can also be ... frickin annoying as hell. Veterinary medicine is noble and extremely gruelling. Her attitude sucks. And for those out there who take it upon themselves to accomplish the difficult task of pointing out the obvious to the world: yes, I do realize that Grey's Anatomy is just a TV show. I'm just using it as an example.

My sister-in-law is a vet and she went to school just as long as a "people doctor" does. A lot of her training has come in handy in paralleling illness or injury to people and their treatments. That is like saying chiropractors, dentist and optometrist aren't skilled doctors in their fields.
Give them their props!

Most people think that a veterinarian isn't a 'real doctor' because they work on 'animals' and not on people ... and they 'forget' that someone who works on something that can't talk and tell him when it hurts takes MORE training and 'empathy' than many medical doctors that treat people have. I have heard of cases where a vet has been able to treat a human and 'do it correctly' when necessary, but have nver heard of a medical doctor taking care of an animal in pain when there is no 'vet' around. That's a 'bad thing' in my mind ... but then I have a 'perfect doctor' who WOULD treat an animal, and he uses them as 'tools' for some of his patients who can't 'get along well with people' ... but it's really too bad that we can't start thinking of 'animals' as being 'the same as we are' ... but as long as we eat meat/fowl/fish, we will NEVER be that 'bright.' And I am an 'omnivore and I love to eat 'meat' (and all of the other stuff) but I could NEVER eat anything I knew when it was 'alive' ...

My attitude, for what's worth is that veterinarians have to be more observant since their patients can't tell them what's wrong. Some think vets are just people that give their pets a pill, and a flea bath, not a real doctor. Personally at times I think my pets get better care at the vets, than I've experienced with my doctor.

As a non-believer in Grey's Anatomy (I just couldn't get into the show) I don't know what Cristina did or said but veternary medicine practice is just as real as "people" medicine practice. Of course, if it came down to saving a human or an animal, the choice would be to save the human (hopefully...depends on the human) but we need vets. The millions of people in this country that care about their animals can tell you that veternary medicine ranks pretty high on the "must have" list.

I understand your point exactly. I think a lot people don't realize how much schooling vets have to complete and they're doing it because they love animals, not to make a million a year or else they would have been a heart surgeon.
Cristina is very negative...I'm anxious for the new season to start so I can see how she handled being left at the altar.

Fair or not, veterinary medicine is seen as a lesser science because it is performed for the benefit of "lesser" beings than humans. I don't necessarily agree and I tend to get impatient with the attitude also. However, I must admit that I value a human child above a puppy, kitten or even an infant ape.

First, I don't know.
Second, allow me to give you a real example to use.
A DVM (doctor of veterinary medicine) first discovered in pigs that ulcers responded to treatment with antibiotics. Upon further research he confirmed ulcers were bacterial infections not stress related ruptures of stomach lining (rather bacteria causes this). His work was published in veterinary journals. His work was ignored by medical doctors. Ten years later a huge discovery was announced in the medical community that ulcers were caused by bacteria and treatment with antibiotics began on humans. The vets in there good natured fashion just yawned at another medical breakthrough they made ten years previous.

i dont watch grey's but i would disagree with peoples bad attitudes towards vets because they actually have to study a lot more and do a lot better in school to qualify them for jobs since there are less job openings for vets than for human doctors. thats what ive heard.

In the real world MD's see VETS as real doc's...it's chiropractors that are not real doc's...which IS true.
