Which country, and how do you mean that? Generally, when people ask this kind of question, they have a particular theme in mind, like political differences, moral views, etc, and these things are entirely subjective. I'm inclined to agree with the gentleman who pointed out RR's inclusion of the religous whacko lobby into our political process, which is a trend that has split the republican party away from its intellectual base. You have to be more specific about these things. In the US, the divisions have always been there, that's how this country is supposed to work.

The central conflict was centered around how much power states should have and what powers or authority the federal government had over the states abilities to self govern. Slavery was the catalyzing issue that tipped the scales and entered our country into civil war
