What were the chances of USA or France colonizing New Zealand? Do you think it would have happened? Maybe the lifestyle of current New Zealanders would be different? How would New Zealand be under US or French rule? Would the things that happened in the past be the same under a different country? (eg. Treaty of Waitangi)

Need opinions and answers, going to use it for a Social Studies project. Thanks to all contributors! :)

The higher degree of probability between these two would have to be in favor of France !! Because, this region of the world was being discovered and explored FOR the possibilities of colonization some while before the USA even had a standing Navy or central basis FOR ships to base from !! Plus, the fact that for a great many years after the USA HAD its beginnings --- its attentions were on the exploration and development of it own continental expanses !! And, there was not even the slightest desire or design on the colonization of ANY place other than its own geographical borders !!!
And, who knows what the implications of France's colonization of New Zealand would have brought --- probably a much more diverse menu of things to eat --- and a history of having its butt beat flat again and again by the English and the Spanish !!!

I don't think that either nation would have had much of a chance to colonize New Zealand. England pretty much been the first out of the gate when it came to large colonies, sure other nations may have tried to make a grab (as the South Pacific goes, New Zealand is a significant landmass), but no one else was willing to put the resources into their colonies like England was. Any other colonial force would soon be absorbed. Just look at what happened to the Dutch in North America and South Africa!

By the time the USA was on the guano claiming period, new zeland was already setteled... So very little chance there...Perhaps a french victory at trafalger could have led to a french settelment...

lifestyles would be slightly different, as the mother countries would probably have introduced different farm animals.

If US, it would be a tourist resort. If France, a govener would have mis-managed it to the point that it was independant by now.

There is a little corner of NZ called Akaroa, on the Banks Peninsula to the east of Christchurch, that was actually a French settlement, established wit the intention of starting a colony.
