For under $1,000???
You really can't go wrong with a Gibson.
You could also get a Gibson SG....for like $600 too.
Also, they have the Gibson "Faded Flying Vs" for like $600.
Watch..check it out for yourself on these 2 links...make sure you look for the Gibson " Faded Flying Vs" too...they should be like $600 with tax on it too.

Is it really a Fender or is it a Squire Fender which is not made in America. Actually, most guitars are made by Sammick outside the United States. The real difference is set up. Reputable music stores will do the set up before you buy the guitar. You cannot get a good guitar right out of the box or from the Internet because it will have to be set up to be playable.
I have a lot of guitars and practice on a cheap 3/4 folk guitar, but they are all professionally set up and maintained. You might be surprised at how much better and and playable the guitar you have will be if you take it in and have it serviced and adjusted.
My Favorite guitar that I own is a Dean hollow body electric given to me by friends. it priced at about 700 + case and I spent about 200 having it completely serviced and set up and it plays like a dream! I bought a 57 Gibson Melody Maker for 25.00 years ago, had it completely set up and changed out to be a hot rod guitar and it rocks - my investment was about 400, it's worth 5X that now and plays like you would not believe.

I've tried different kinds of guitars and have always been a fan of the Gibson guitars, especially the Flying V and the Explorer. You can't beat a Les Paul for sustain and sweet tone.
I also own an Ibanez Destroyer which is similar to the Explorer, the sound is amazing and I didn't even have to change out the pickups, it sounded great without any mods.
I have a Jackson Randy Rhoads model which I'm still trying out different pickups on, I'll probably put the DiMarzio super distortion humbuckers in. I had the DiMarzio X2N in but the magnets were so strong it affected the tuning (I keep the pickups as close to the strings as possible). EMG pickups have great tone, but you have to remember to keep spare batteries.

I'm sure if you hunt around real hard you may be able to find a 2nd hand PRS, the best money can buy in my opinion,
but if you don't mind the eighties look go for a Ibanez they're cheap and easy to play, Musicman are like fender only way better so try one of those too

What you have to do is try out different guitars and find out which one suits you the best. What works for one person might not work for you. Also, don't buy a guitar simply because you like the way it looks. It might not feel right for you and it might not produce the sounds you like. My daughter did this and she's now stuck with a guitar she never plays. She's trying to get rid of it.

Your fender is iffy....
Man if a fender won't do it for you then get a epiphone or ibanez. If you must get a gibson but I'm personally against high priced over rated guitars.
