Hell, if any government sold off publicly owned assets like Telstra, International airports in every capital city, and utilites like power stations, refused to substantially service the public health service and public hospitals nationwide, refused to invest in new infrastructure such adequate new highways, new dams, manufacturing industries to value add the exportation of raw minerals, and was permanently blind to our drought damaged rural industries refusing to instigate a permanent solution to their water shortage problems, then I am sure any government would look like financial genii (thats plural of genius) by saving our hard earned tax dollars (billions of them) so they can spend it on PR telling us how good they are. I believe they have part of the population fooled. They're policies may look good to share holders if this were a public company but they are lowering living standards in this country with their domestic fiscal policies. Anyone else agree?

You are absolutely SPOT ON!! Mal Brough said yesterday that the people living in poverty in Australia can take heart because the economy is strong!! Is that going to put food on the table? What good is a strong economy and a big fat surplus when you can't earn enough to pay your bills?? They need to get real and come down and see what it is like to live in the real world.

Any fool should be able to manage the economy here with the massive windfall from GST and the resources boom. Combine that with the habit they have of underfunding the states on health and education so they can point out how badly the Labour states are doing and you must be on a winner. They are probably the shiftiest government this country has ever had and if the people aren't on to them by now I will give up in dis pair. Oh. And underfunding the universities so they can change it to the US system.
Come on Australia, it's time we became a compassionate, caring society again.

Yeah, they're full of baloney and people are fooled because they don't understanding how economics really works and are just sucked in by the Lib's misinformation and constant preying on their fears (mortgages...).

If I just took and didn't give back anything I'd have a surplus too.

Ross Gittins' economic commentary nicely balances out all the government propaganda and misleading boasting:

I am sick of the way johnny is pillaging our country for the benefit of his own personal appaerance.
we now have a massive surplus cos he has sold so much of our assets and not put that money back into the public domain. The Howard govenment is not a good enonomic management team, they do not aintain lower interest rates, they do not improve public health care, they have not improved public transport or roads, i have never voted for howard and i never will.
Howard sucks.
