Well, it's kinda obvious from the name. Federalists believed (and said so in the Federalist papers) that the U.S. should be a federation, where a central government (fully equipped with three arms: legislative, executive, and judicial) exists and has certain powers, and where federal law prevails over the state law, should a conflict occur.

The opposing view at the time was that the U.S. should be a confederation, where the central government only has a largely ceremonial executive branch, and federal law either shouldn't exist at all or should only exist after being ratified by all states, or should have lower precedence compared to state law.

Well. . .the federalists were groups of people who believed in having a stronger central government; thus, more power to the federal government. . .the Federalist Papers are just essays expressing their beliefs
