Friedman's book is about economic globalization in the 21st Century. In this case, the term refers to the "leveling of the playing field" between the economic powerhouses of the West and the rising economic powers of India and China.

It is about economics and politics. It is NOT about a non-spherical planet.

There are still some people around that believe that the earth is flat and it is possible to fall off the edge of the earth.
If you looked at the eclipse you would have noticed that as the earths shadow was moving across the moon it had a curved shape and not a straight line.
This proves that the earth is round as the shadow is a curve - if the earth was flat the shadow would have a straight edge.
