But it does me...
Why can't people spell out a whole word???
And use uppercase letters and all that good stuff?
Does it really hurt to type a few more letters....

"Y-O-U" "A-R-E"
etc.

Haha.
"etc"
I should've spelled that out to prove my point again...
Damnit.

Well, along with using the abbreviation of "et cetera", you also used the contractions "can't" and "should've". So, technically, you're not spelling out the whole word either. But I digress.... ;)

People have just become lazy and ignorant when writing. Add the fact that kids can't spell or read half as well as they should (too many kids are progressing to middle school at a 2nd grade level), and you just have *crap*. All the texting abbreviations that people use routinely are just crap.

Blame the cell phone people. It's all that TEXT messaging. Its great for those who can't spell to begin with. But it drives the rest of us NUTS.
We were all taught how important it was to spell things correctly. Do you realize that with the program "NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND" that there are more & more young adults who can barely read, let alone spell? And worst of all, they are letting them graduate from High School.
Think about that for awhile...Scary, huh?

That does bother me to a certain extent. I don't mind people using apostrophes to shorten phrases, just when they type such things as "R U going 2 the mall 2day". It makes you wonder if people even know how to spell
What bothers me even more is when people don't use any kind of punctuation and use all lower case letters. Then you have to guess where the sentences begin and end...that really gets under my skin!

Laziness and the slow but sure bastardization of the English language through chat rooms and text messaging. God bless America.

By the way, using all upper case letters is just as annoying in my opinion as using cut up language.

You do not seem to be bothered by "tomorrow" which is actually "to the morrow" or Mr. which is Mister or t'was which is This was.... etcetera. etcetera. etcetera..... language changes. Please read the book "The MAdman and the Professor" which is all about the writin g of the Oxford English Dictionary and how the original concept was to keep language pure and steady.... when fifty years into uthe realized that it was impossible, language is an ever growing thung that takes on a life of its' own.

I call it "thumbspeak" because they do their texting on their cell phones with their thumbs, mostly. I've heard those who do it call it shorthand.

Either way, there doesn't seem to be any real excuse for it in THIS forum other than the delusion that one is terribly clever to do it.

Incidentally, it should be noted here that "et cetera" is two words, not one. et (and) cetera (the rest, or the others).

I hear you loud and clear. I nearly always spell out words and use full sentences with proper grammar.
