a eureka moment that evolves into something more

Both, either and sometimes none of the above.
I suppose it has a lot to do with who 'you' are.
Then there's the question of 'purpose'... some might dispute people have purposes, some folks would say procreation is all life's purpose, and still others would say that finding contentment with your situation, however dreary and depressing it is, fulfils life's purpose.

You certainly improve your chances at having a fulfilling life if you work hard on improving yourself - that way, if and when purpose finds you, all the necessary skills and talents you have will give you a head up.

In a funny way, you're asking what the meaning of life is... and, frankly, we just don't have all the answers. Maybe if we knew what happened in the hereafter (if anything), we'd have a different take on this whole 'purpose' thing.

By definition, life's purpose requires God. Purpose implies an intelligent design. Only God can give us a mission (purpose) at the same time as giving us existence. If we reject God, then we reject purpose and meaning and our existence is pointless.

If we accept that God might exist, then God must have put our great need for purpose into our human nature to point us to seek Him. So seeking God and finding Him is our purpose and all else flows from that.

But if we insist on rejecting God, then all we can do is to keep our minds occupied and do whatever we can to feel good about ourselves until death takes us. We can feel good about ourselves (gain feelings of worth) by doing something praiseworthy and then basking in the resulting real and imagined praise. Then we identify our purpose with whatever it is that makes us feel good.

Unless you want someone else's purpose to fall on your lap, go out and discover and reap what you sow.

It's got to be a combo- don't you agree? Based on ones experiences most will pursue one avenue or another... how do you know what will make you happy and an income at the same time until you try it? i believe you have to search...
