Strangely enough, there are a high number of incidents where couples divorce within a few years after winning the lottery. The Mega Lottery jackpot has now reached $325 million dollars. My wife for the past week or two have been fantasizing about what we would do if we won the jackpot and our views are so different. My wife would want to live an extravagant lifestyle complete with a 15,000 square foot mansion, maids, butlers, etc, etc,. As for me, I would be satisified with a modest 3,000 square foot home in a middle class suburb, a new car or two and helping out our friends, family, church and donating to charities. Although, there is a great chance I won't have to worry about this happening, I have been pondering whether or us winning the lottery would be a blessing or a curse. I am an average working class Joe and I have no desire whatsoever, to live in a mansion or have maids and butlers waiting on me hand and foot. Is your marriage strong enough to withstand the Mega lotto jackpot

Most people would quit their jobs if they won that kind of money and I am no different. Most people might consider hiring someone to clean their house if they won that kind of money. And I would, too.

The thing is, marriage is a lot of work, too. And you can't hire someone else to do that kind of work for you. And if you win the lottery, your marriage will be even more work. But if it was strong, it will probably survive.

I expect those marriages that fail after winning the lottery, were already failing, the money just enabled them to leave each other without the inevitable blow to your standard of living that happens when middle and lower class families split up.

Perhaps this is why celebrities have higher divorce rates... they can afford to get divorced.

Half of 325 million is 167 million in some change. If my wife and I separated and divorced after having won the lottery, and I felt the need to still have a wife, I would just buy a new one.

Most of the stories show winnings... especially THAT big.. to be a curse... My daydream is all these wonderful things, but the statistics do not look good for sudden wealth.
My guess is... being very SPIRITUALLY grounded would be the key.. Humility and spirituality.
Lack of those two qualities... most likely spells trouble.

my husband loves to live estravagantly and we can't afford it. i'm the more sensible person when it comes to tight living. however...given the right amount of money....i'd be eating sushi every night. i love traveling with my husband. he loves the best things in life and if i had the money...you'd better believe i'd be living a lavish lifestyle as well. i'd probably go for a half and half. one stable lovely home ro the school year...and a few summer properties. maybe some nice hotels for weekend travel with the children. definitely do Disneyworld every year. some investing as well. at least half anyway to maintain that lifestyle for several generations. honestly...if i had the money....i hope to live just like Angelina Jolie. that's my idea of perfect wealth.

Absolutely. My husband and I share very similar values when it comes to spending. We have lived together for 6 years being poor (He's military). Without a doubt, if you throw some money into the marriage, we would be ecstatic. Our kids would have college funds and our favorite charities would definitely benefit.

My husband and I have been doing the opposite.

We've been fantasizing if we won we would sell everything and down-size our life a lot.

We would do a lot of traveling and buy a very nice condo.

We have talked about this as well. I think we would be okay. We are both very comfortable living modestly, but having lots of fun and insuring our futures. We both decided we would keep our (teacher) jobs as well.
