kind of open question...there's different types based on what you are drilling like masonry or wood or metal. There are boring bits that make big holes (like for a door lock) and even tapping bits that add screw threads (tap and die)

Black Oxide and Titanium plated are best for wood and palstics. Use Cobalt when drilling metals, but use cutting oil to keep from burning up the bit. Use Tungsten Carbide for drilling hardened or exotic metals, again use cutting oil.

You will use fractional bits most often for your regular home projects. You will need the special numbered and lettered bits when you need to drill precision holes for using taps to thread the holes.

Do you mean different sizes?
Like fractional, metric, number drills, letter drills?
Different materials like steel or diamond drills?
