I wouldn't go up to him and say hello any more than I would do that in the office. IF you happen to cross paths at the gym, then I would smile and say hello. Maybe you can add something like, "It's good to see I'm not the only one from _________ (fill in your company's name) to come to this gym!" That way, in case your face looks familiar, but he can't place you, he'll know you're from the office.
DEFINITELY do not join him unless you are invited.

No, no no. Never do that. There is still an unspoken rule in this country that you don't 'mix' with the CEO"s....smile - truth is - it's okay to speak to him, but I'd smile and just offer encouragement (enjoy your work out sir!) and keep moving. Most of the time people like to be in their own zone when they are working out.
Now, if you continue to see him on a regular basis - and he sees and recognizes 'who' you are - allow HIM to make the move to say something about sharing workout moves. Don't just assume and join him.

It all depends on his personality. I mean at work does he like company or does he like to be left alone? If you see that at work he likes to be with himself then when you see him at the gym say a quick hello. If he asks you to join him then of course you can stay and chit chat .

Yeah I probably wouldn't attempt to kick it with him at the stair master. You could try to introduce yourself at work when you're looking more professional--maybe then you can use the "I saw you at the gym" intro to break the ice.
I would say if you bump into him at the gym however, it would be polite to say something.

how big IS he ??? ( I would only say hello, if I absolutely had to pass by him. Otherwise , I'd say give a person their space and privacy. Unless, you work with people you really get along with, and hang with, I'd give them some space. Some people want to be as faraway from "work" as possible.

Say hell if that is your style, and see how it goes. Definietly don't ignore him just because of who he is. Generally people in a high position appreciate being treated like a "normal" person unless they are a jerk anyway. Be yourself and remember they fart too ;)

I would think a simple hello would do unless he invited you to join him.

Depends how big of a boss. If he's folksy then sure join him. If he's not, then the slightest of nods is plenty.
