can a videotape be used as evidence for assault charges? I'm not saying i'm planning something. I'm just curious.

Yes, modern technology can detect bogus tapes.

Cops use video tapes all the time in court.

Generally, yes -- unless something about how the video was taken is itself illegal.

For it to be admissible, a proper foundation must be laid -- showing the video was taken normally, was not tampered with, is (shows) what it claims to, etc.
