it was amazing the way he wrote it in hoping to achieve awareness. I think that the piece is however confusing and utter rubbish to a good amount of young people. Were there any particular quotes that you especially liked, and do you agree with some of the things he said?

I have always admired Joseph Campbell. I think you might actually get more from the videos of the same name -- a series of live interviews conducted by journalist Bill Moyers for PBS. Seeing the man talk would help you see his philosophy and thoughts come alive.

His most popular quote which his colleagues said he used often was: "Follow your bliss."

He once expanded on this phrase by saying: "If you follow your bliss, you'll always have your bliss; but if you follow money, you may lose it at some time."

Campbell believed that myth helps human beings rise above our every day lives. While I think he would like to believe his book might have everlasting value, he would be the first to agree that sometimes invidual myths become "out of date."

"The function of the artist is the mythologization of the culture and the world. In the visual arts there were two men whose work handled mythological themes in a marvelous way: Paul Klee and Pablo Picasso." ~~Joseph Campbell, "The Power of Myth"

I hope you will continue to learn more about Joseph Campbell. I particularly like this quote from "Pathways to Bliss: Mythology and Personal Transformation":

"Eternity is not future or past. Eternity is a dimension of now. It is a dimension of the human spirit—which is eternal. Find that eternal dimension in yourself, and you will ride through time, and throughout the whole length of your days. What helps to reflect the knowledge of this transpersonal, transhistorical dimension of your being and experience to you are these mythological archetypes—these eviternal symbols that live in all the mythologies of the world, that have been the support models of human life forever."

Just as I was posting this, I remembered that there is the Joseph Campbell Foundation. To learn more about the man and his work, go to:
