Once you've removed the original source of the problem and cleaned, go to a home improvement store or garden center and buy a fruit fly trap. Basically it is a jar that you mix a liquid (comes with the trap) and all the lingering flies will go in it and can't get out. You can then dispose of them and the liquid, wash the jar and save it for next time. There are different kinds and sizes, they all pretty much work the same and cost under $10.

Remove all garbage in your sink & pour some Clorox down the kitchen sink drains, then get rid of all garbage in your kitchen wastebasket. You may have to spray an insect spray in each room & then leave home for a while. Just spray a little bit & that should help get rid of the pests. Vacuum your home well once the pests are gone. (they will drop on the floor when they get a whiff of the insect spray)

I just had that same problem because of peaches. Once I threw them in the trash and took my trash out, I cleaned my kitchen with Lysol Kitchen Cleaner. Then I made sure there was nothing left out that those pesky fruit flies could eat. It took a couple days, but they all died. Then I re-cleaned my kitchen! Hope this helps...I know it's not an immediate fix.

My trick is to trick them into entering a plastic bag with old food in it and then using Raid, I spray inside the bag, keeping it almost closed then when I am done spraying I tie the bag closed, bug gone. Oh, and then I spray around where the bugs were and if I missed any I get them then! Then scrub out the sink with scouring powder and rinse well. Bug gone!

Remove the source of food and then do as Amanda M suggests. You can pull them right out of the air and rest assured they will not find fruit fly living conditions in the vacuum.

Once the kitchen is properly clean (bleach) and all fruit and veg are away preferably in the fridge, open the window and they'll leave. May take a day or two.

Get a spray bottle and fill it with alcohol. (Not jack daniels). You can spray them in the air or spray them when they land on the cabinets and etc. It will take persistance. But it will work.I have to do this when my dad leaves bananas out too long. It works on all bugs. Spiders and waterbugs, too.
